FRANK
VAN LENTEN was introduced to the martial arts while in the Marine Corps during
the early 1950's. After achieving black belts in Kenpo and Judo in Hawaii,
he was stationed in Japan and later in Okinawa where he became devoted to
the art of Karate-do.
Master Van Lenten has received his highest rankings from the island of Okinawa's traditional martial art organizations. |

PAUL
OKAMI is a published author of many articles for Inside Karate, Black Belt
and other magazines. He is recognized an authority on Goju-Ryu in this country.
Mr Okami is known for his precise interpretation of technique, kata, bunkai and Japanese terminology. |

GOJU-RYU
was developed by Okinawan instructor Chojun Miyagi from one of the oldest
styles, Shorei-Ryu or Naha-Te. Goju-Ryu is known for its emphasis on low stance
training, dynamic tension and breathing exercises. Training builds strength,
muscle, bone structure and endurance.
Goju-Ryu and its antecedents have influenced almost every modern style of karate, including Shotokan, Shito Ryu, Isshin Ryu, Wado Ryu, and other classical systems.

Goju-ryu
is considered the forerunner of all other Karate styles. Many Goju-ryu

tape, based on Gogen Yamaguchi's branch of the art, covers basics of
striking, kicking and body evasion. Okami moves on to examine both the
superficial and deeper meaning of the katas Gekisai Ichi, Saifa, Sanchin
and Tensho, as well as Kumite or Free-fighting.
If you've ever wondered why katas are done as they are, Okami demonstrates how understanding the intent of the kata clarifies the application of the movements. Obvious striking and blocking applications and the traditional tui-te is taught. This
